Xavier Escribà

Xavier Escribà (Paris, France, 1969) studied art at the University of Barcelona and later in Paris (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts). He lived in Paris for more than ten years and his career began there. His pictorial development could be described as a continuation of the French Support-Surface movement. He exhibits regularly in France and Spain and his works are part of the international scene at fairs such as Fiac, Arco, The Armory Show, ArtBasel or ArtCologne. He lives and works in Catalonia, Spain.

The artist's works entail the accumulation of layers of paint, one after another, as many as the age he is at the time of the work, until reaching the last one, which will be the one that contains him and all the others. On other occasions, based on the same technique, the conclusion will be shown as a memory of the entire process, through the cuts, fragmentation or decomposition of the painting on the original canvas to become the three-dimensional object made up of the arrangement of those different parts previously folded, rolled, folded... the intention of the artist: the continuity that all this generates from the beginning to the conclusion.

“In the mid-90s I decided to dedicate myself solely and exclusively to painting. This fact coincided at the moment that I renounced that the pictorial practice became only a cumulative race of final versions validated in the form of images. I decided that I would make a painting that would show the balance between all the moments that define artistic activity (from the first to the last)... It is for this reason that the support of the canvas is often the protagonist; That is also why I freely decide to do without the skeleton of the frame to support the canvas, in fact, it does not need it since there is enough paint to support itself. I also dispense with the frame because its presence refers me to the empty window, to a supposed nothing in front of everything that would be the elaborated image..."

His works are part of important private and public collections.

Art works I Sculptures

“Després de l’inici”, Acrilic on canvas. 2013-2014

“...The work DESPRES DE L'INICI wants to show this double intention: On the one hand, I pay homage to the support of the canvas and with the presence of the knots I remember that it is the color that dominates the canvas and not the traditional structure of the frame that in this case is unnecessary..”
